Context
A delivery is easy to model while it goes well. The difficulty is everything else: who is holding the parcel right now, what happens when nobody is at the address, who is owed what once it is finally delivered, and how an operations team sees any of that while it is happening. Mutumwa is built around those states rather than around the happy path.
Mutumwa is an end-to-end merchant delivery network for Harare. It connects merchants, drivers, recipients and operations teams across dispatch, tracking, custody, settlement and failed-delivery handling — the whole path a delivery takes, including the parts that go wrong.
What was built
Product decisions
Every delivery moves through explicit states, and custody is one of them. Knowing who holds a parcel at any moment — merchant, driver, collection point, recipient — is what makes failed deliveries and disputes tractable instead of a phone call.
A merchant needs to know about their own deliveries. An operations team needs to see across all of them and intervene. Building these as separate surfaces over one model avoids the usual outcome, where an internal tool is exposed to customers with some buttons hidden.
Merchant wallets and settlement are modelled as a ledger. Delivery fees, failed-delivery outcomes and payouts all resolve against it, so what a merchant is owed is derived from recorded events rather than maintained by hand.
The driver application targets the devices drivers actually carry, and assumes connectivity will drop mid-delivery. Collection evidence and state changes are captured on the device and reconciled, rather than requiring a live connection at the moment they happen.
Mutumwa is in development and has not yet launched commercially.
